Top cricketer Kane Williamson opted not to sign a central contract and resign as captain following New Zealand’s loss from the T20 World Cup. The 33-year-old pledged to represent New Zealand whenever needed and expressed a desire to play more franchise cricket. Williamson is not the only cricket player from New Zealand, though, who has chosen not to sign central contracts. Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, and Adam Milne have also taken similar actions, which has made matters difficult for New Zealand.
Tom Latham, who will probably captain the BlackCaps in one-day internationals, saw the current pattern and said that cricket in New Zealand is moving in a different direction. He said that when the senior cricket players come back, it will be intriguing to have them in the team, particularly in big events, but that until then, he expects NZC to be flexible with player contracts.
I believe that the current trajectory of cricket in New Zealand is a little different. With so many leagues emerging, the issue is undoubtedly not clear-cut and is evolving. Depending on their age or stage of life, I suppose everyone is in a somewhat different boat with regard to what their future may hold,” Latham was cited
“There’s a lot of cricket to be played in the summer, and the Champions Trophy, the ICC’s premier event, is something to look forward to.” Therefore, whenever we can get our hands on them, whether it’s with new hires or the folks we know and love, that will be fantastic. However, we must be flexible about how things pan out in the future, he continued.

Latham has filled in for Williamson on several occasions and done an excellent job. Regarding assuming the position full-time, Latham stated that it would be an honour for him and that he would always prioritise his team, whether or not he is the leader.

It would undoubtedly be an honour. For me, it’s always been about doing all in my power to prioritise the needs of the team. I’m sure they’ll have those conversations about what they want as a team, and it would be truly amazing if I could do that, Latham added.
