The audacious move of dismissing Virat Kohli from the ODI captaincy and installing Rohit Sharma in his place was made by former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. He received a lot of backlash for the decision, especially during Kohli’s press conference prior to India’s 2022 visit of South Africa. The 52-year-old said at the time that it was a mutual choice, but Kohli later gave a different account of the events, claiming to have received a call informing him that he was being removed.
After that, Sourav Ganguly remained silent about the issue till after India’s victory in the T20 World Cup. The former cricket player recalled that it was he who supported Rohit as captain when he eventually brought an ICC trophy to India after 11 years, following the Men in Blue’s victory in the competition. Ganguly continued by saying that although he was attacked at the time for the decision, no one is aware of it anymore.

Following Ricky Ponting’s departure from the Delhi Capitals, Ganguly declared his intention to assume the role of head coach.
