At the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on July 6, during the Lanka Premier League 2024 match, Chamika Karunaratne
came dangerously close to pulling off a stunning comeback against the Kandy Falcons. Karunaratne, who was positioned at the boundary line, rushed towards the ball to pick it out of thin air as Shadab Khan delivered the eighth over of the match. Mohammad Haris hit one towards extra cover.
Grabbing the ball with his outstretched hand, the all-round bowler fell to the ground. There was much rejoicing when the third umpire desired to examine it. The on-field ruling was reversed as it was revealed by the replays that Karunaratne had brushed the ball’s skin onto the ground as he was concluding the dive. Later on, Haris scored 56 from 29 balls because of the missed opportunity.

In their seasonlong unbeaten streak versus the Falcons, the Strikers
Karunaratne made a significant cameo for the Colombo Strikers, blasting 13 runs off 5 balls, prior to the missed opportunity event. Angelo Matthews turned the tide of the match in favour of the Falcons by smashing two sixes and a boundary as the Falcons’ pursuit came down to scoring 20 off the last over. Falcons lost by two runs despite Thisara Perera’s outstanding run out on the final ball, which demanded three runs.

With two wins in three games, Colombo Strikers are now ranked third in the standings. They lost the second game to Galle Marvels by seven runs after defeating Kandy Falcons by 51 runs in the first. They kept their winning record against the Falcons intact with another two-run triumph. However, with just one victory in their previous four games, the Falcons are clinging to the second-to-last position.
