Nathan Lyon, an experienced Australian spinner, acknowledged that it was strange to support his fierce competitor James Anderson. In the County Championship, Lyon and Anderson are playing together for Lancashire. Anderson had a great start to his final Test for England, collecting remarkable figures of 7/35 against Nottinghamshire.
Lyon expressed his admiration for his performance, but he also mentioned how strange it seemed considering how bitterly Australia and England rival each other. Lyon continued, saying it was an honour to play with one of the best pacers of all time and that the beauty of county cricket was supporting players from opposing nations.
On the opposite side, of course, I’ve witnessed it. We briefly exchanged pleasantries, with me saying something like “come on Jimmy” and him responding with something like “nice Garry.” Lyon was quoted on the Lancashire website as saying, “That was a little different, but I guess that’s the beauty of county cricket, and it’s pretty special to play with arguably the greatest bowler to play the game.”

Anderson’s outstanding session, in which he claimed seven wickets and let up just 35 runs, was also praised by Lyon. He described Anderson as being in a different league than the other bowlers and that he was shocked that England was letting him leave.

“He demonstrated his class, James Anderson. I don’t mean to disparage the other bowlers in this match, but Jimmy’s quality and extra speed off the wicket are evident. I’ve expressed my amazement that England has reached out to him previously. He is world-class and full of class. His skill set, particularly in England, is amazing, and he’s arguably the greatest fast bowler to have ever played the game, according to Lyon.
