South Africa at last made it to the ICC event final in 2024, following years of heartache. In order to go to the final, where they faced an exceptionally formidable opponent in India, the Aiden Markram-led team went undefeated throughout the competition and overcame Afghanistan. On the night of the final, South Africa appeared strong and was poised to take home the trophy, but a devastating seven-run loss occurred in the final five overs.
Recalling that, top Proteas player David Miller said he was devastated by the defeat and that it was a difficult pill to swallow.
In the last over, the 35-year-old South African had a chance to win the match, but Suryakumar Yadav made a fantastic catch that sent him packing, ending their chances. Miller continued, saying that the trip had been amazing and that he was confident the group will continue to push the envelope in the future.

“I am completely devastated! After what happened two days ago, this is a really difficult pill to swallow. I cannot put it into words how I feel. I am aware of my pride in this unit, though. Throughout the entire month, there were highs and lows on this amazing adventure. Miller posted on his Instagram story, “We have suffered, but I have faith that this team will persevere and keep pushing the envelope.

Interestingly, South Africa was the favourites to win the match and their first ICC title, needing 30 runs from the same amount of balls. Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, were fantastic with the ball, helping India get back into the game and ultimately land the game-winning blow. India’s second T20 World Cup and first ICC championship in more than a decade were won by the team captained by Rohit Sharma.
While the past cricket players have inspired the players by saying they are happy of the effort they put in, many South African players have yet to respond to the loss.
