Sanjay Manjrekar comments on India’s T20 WC 2022 loss: “Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have never confessed that they helped them lose the semifinals.”

Sanjay Manjrekar comments on India's T20 WC 2022 loss: "Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have never confessed that they helped them lose the semifinals."

The strategy used by seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after England won the toss and sent India in to bat was a major topic of dispute that generated a great deal of discussion long after the game and still does. Their scores of 27 (28) and 50 (40) were closely examined, especially as they were well aware of how explosive the English batting lineup was.  In spite of this, they chose to play cautiously, concentrating on extending the innings instead of taking chances, which many felt was a bad approach considering the circumstances of the game.

Given the strength and potency of both teams as well as their rosters of elite players, the India-England semi-final was expected to be a closely-contested match following an impressive group-stage performance in which India won four out of five matches in the Super 12s of the T20 World Cup 2022. However, the game ended up being a lopsided affair, especially the second half.

With a convincing ten-wicket victory, England proceeded to the final, which they eventually won against Pakistan. The English openers dominated and blasted the Indian bowlers all around the Adelaide Oval, leaving them perplexed and with no break.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar addressed the subject in a recent conversation, concentrating mostly on the positive outcome of that game. He declared that the embarrassing defeat was a turning point for India as a Twenty20 team, calling it an awakening for the group. While Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have never acknowledged that their innings contributed to the loss, Manjrekar pointed out that the current Indian team offers a very different story.

“India’s status as a T20 team has entirely shifted. That served as a warning to India. They might not acknowledge it. Although Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have never acknowledged that they contributed to India’s semifinal loss, this new India is very different. The fact that England appears to be a little weaker than they were a few years ago is also positive for India. Thus, that only serves to advance India’s interests “Manjrekar said ESPNcricinfo.

The fact that Virat Kohli doesn’t have the runs makes him a slight concern: Manjrekar

The cricketer-turned-commentator talked about Kohli and his alarming run of low scores (66 runs in six innings) and said that even though he is going through a difficult time, he has stuck to his strategy of taking chances and not worried about getting out. Nevertheless, given his stellar record, Manjrekar voiced optimism that Kohli would rise to the occasion in this crucial match.

“Virat Kohli hasn’t scored enough runs to be a major concern, but he has remained true to his risk-taking strategy and doesn’t care about going out. Whether he will carry on like that in the semifinal is another matter entirely. This is a man who has assumed accountability on the grand stage and he believes he must do it. In addition, he has few runs. “You can tell he’s batting a little differently if he picks a single after hitting a four or a six,” Manjrekar continued.
