David Miller has also received one demerit point added to his disciplinary record; this was his first infraction in a 24-month span.
At Friday, June 21, in the Super Eights Group 2 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 versus England at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia, David Miller of South Africa received an official reprimand for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match,” was judged to have been violated by David Miller.
Miller played a full toss from Sam Curran and anticipated it to be a “no ball” for height in the 19th over of South Africa’s innings. He expressed his disagreement with the umpire’s ruling when it was not ruled a “no ball” by indicating that it should have been reviewed even though it was not possible. During the World Cup, there is no way to challenge the on-field umpire’s decision to call a wide or no-ball.
Along with Quinton de Kock’s 65 off 38, Miller’s 28-ball 43 was Aiden Markram and Co.’s only noteworthy effort on a surface that most English and South African hitters found challenging to manipulate. The Proteas eventually prevailed 163 runs to win by seven runs, extending their winning streak to six games in the tournament.
There was no need for a formal hearing because Miller acknowledged the offence and accepted the punishment suggested by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. The accusation was levelled by fourth umpire Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Joel Wilson, and on-field umpires Chris Brown and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid.
Level 1 violations are punishable by an official reprimand as a minimum, 50% of the player’s match fee as a maximum, and one or two demerit points.
