Why is the Indian team sporting black armbands during their Super 8 match vs Afghanistan, explained?
In remembrance of former India pacer David Johnson, who unfortunately died in Bengaluru earlier in the day at the age of fifty-two, the Indian team will wear black armbands against Afghanistan during their Super Eight encounter on Thursday in Barbados.

Johnson, who ran a cricket academy, had recently been dealing with health issues. He unfortunately died after falling from his fourth-floor flat balcony, according to a Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) official cited by The Times of India. Johnson’s two children and his wife survive him.

During his playing career, Johnson bowled right-arm pace for Karnataka in 72 domestic matches and appeared in just two Test matches for India. He also had a career-best bowling average of 8/55 and a top score of 101*. His total of 166 domestic wickets came from his bowling, which includes eight five-fors and one ten-for.

His achievements in cricket at home were remarkable. In particular, his remarkable innings of 10 for 152 against Kerala in the 1995–96 Ranji Trophy season was a major factor in his promotion to the Indian squad. Pace-mongering Johnson once set a record with a delivery against Australia in a one-off Test match in Delhi in 1996, clocking in at 157.8 km/h. With that ball, he famously removed the imposing Michael Slater.

While on the South African trip, the right-arm pacer was only involved in the first Test match, where he took the much sought-after wickets of Brian McMillan and Herschelle Gibbs.
