Shubman Gill Breaks His Silence Regarding Skipper Rohit Sharma's Support

Young Indian opener Shubman Gill is pleased that his captain, Rohit Sharma, and the team management have shown their complete support for him, which has enabled him to play his “natural game” in the first one-day international match against Sri Lanka.

The previous day, the Indian captain made it clear that he preferred Gill in the opener’s slot ahead of in-form left-hander Ishan Kishan. The following day, Gill repaid the faith with a well-compiled 70 from 60 balls to set up India’s massive victory over Sri Lanka in the opening ODI on Tuesday. India won by 67 runs.

“When your captain has your back, it’s a great feeling. During the practise sessions, this was the topic of discussion that we had: during the one-day matches, I should try to play the version of my game that comes most naturally to me. Simply focus on maintaining the current momentum, “During the post-match media discussion, Shubman Gill made the following statement.

In one-day internationals (ODIs), Shubman Gill had a productive year in 2022, scoring 638 runs over the course of 12 innings with an average of 70.88. This featured his first century and four fifty-point scores.

He started the year 2023 with yet another half-century as he and Rohit put on an opening stand of 143 runs that set the tone for India’s massive score of 373/7. This continued where he left off in the previous year.

Regarding the chemistry he shared with Rohit at the top of the order, he said the following: “In the majority of the tests, we batted first. It’s a pleasure to go up against him. the general topic of discussion is which bowler to target, what they are trying to accomplish, and where they are attempting to prevent our runs.

As a result, we formulate our strategies.” Shubman Gill, on the other hand, was dismissed by Dasun Shanaka in the 20th over, which prevented him from scoring a century.

“Without a doubt, I felt like a complete loser when I got out on the 70. I was the one who put in all the effort to get things rolling and bring in a big one for the squad.

I had roughly 30 more overs to bat before I was out, which happened in the 20th over.” In their defence of 374 runs, India had Sri Lanka in a tight place with 179/7 after 33 overs, but they were unable to wrap up the tail as Shanaka’s unbeaten 108 runs off 88 balls brought them to 306/8.

Gill attributed the problem to the heavy dew and said: “Because of how well we bowled, I don’t believe that bowling should be an issue. We were able to get eight runs off of them on that wicket, and there was dew as well.

It was difficult to bowl when you were bowling second with so much dew.” “It’s not simple to control the wet ball.” “It was difficult to bowl when you were bowling second with that much dew.” The spinners have the potential to be eliminated from the game on occasion; however, this did not occur during this match.

“Both Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel bowled exceptionally effectively for their respective teams. Fielding can be difficult due to the damp conditions; the ball can easily slide off the field, and it is difficult to grab the ball because of how slippery it is.

It’s like having butter in your hands and trying to play with it. When there is dew on the lanes, bowling might be difficult.” In addition, Gill stated that the hitters were making every effort to cut down on the quantity of dot balls.

“We are always looking for new ways to enhance our performance in many domains and facets. We are currently working on it. Playing dot balls is not something any batsman enjoys doing.

“As a batsman, you (need to) have that confidence that you can cover up the runs later, even if you are playing the dot balls. However, there are times when you need to look at the game situation. For example, if the game situation doesn’t demand you to play too many high-scoring shots because two wickets have fallen, the situation doesn’t demand that you play too many high-scoring shots.

But you’re right, that is one of the areas in which we are constantly working to do better.” Gill remarked that Umran Malik astonished him with his sheer pace. Umran Malik also impressed “It is never boring and always a good challenge to go up against Umran at the nets.

As someone who enjoys competing against fast bowlers, I find that facing Umran at the nets provides me with an adequate amount of difficulty.”
