India's head coach Rahul Dravid says T20 World Cup 2024 is his last

Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team at the moment, has stated that the 2024 T20 World Cup will be his final job. The iconic batsman has made the decision not to reapply for the highly sought-after job when his term expires in June.

There have been both successes and setbacks throughout Dravid’s time as the head coach. Under his leadership, the Indian side nearly won the ODI World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship, two significant ICC championships, last year. The T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in 2024, in particular, offers Dravid one last chance to lead the team to victory.

“Each competition has significance. Each and every match I have coached for India has held great significance for me. Therefore, even though it would be my final project under my supervision, for me, this one is no different,” Rahul Dravid was cited by the Times of India.

Sincerely, it won’t be my last, but it won’t be any different: Rahul Dravid

Given his exceptional playing record and his love for the game, many are surprised by the 51-year-old’s choice not to extend his contract. Nonetheless, his choice has been impacted by his hectic schedule and private concerns.

“I adore my work.” I think it’s a really special thing to do, and I’ve really liked coaching India. It was a pleasure working with this team, and these guys are awesome to work with, but given the circumstances—namely, my current stage of life and my schedule—I don’t think I will be able to reapply,” he continued.

“Well, it’s my final one, of course, but to be really honest, I don’t feel any different about it. Every game matters and every game matters, and that will never change, that’s how I’ve felt since the first day I started working here,” Dravid said.

Gautam Gambhir, a former teammate of Dravid, is seen as the front-runner to succeed him. The BCCI, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has posted an advertisement for the head coach role. With a lot of expertise, Gambhir brings to the table a declared interest in the post. a member of the winning squads in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup; two IPL trophies won as captain; accomplished mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

Coaching the Indian squad is something I would really love to do. Being a national team coach is the ultimate honour. At a gathering in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir remarked, “You are representing 140 crore Indians as well as people around the world.”
