Moeen Ali Hopes Baby Arrives on Time Amid Jos Buttler's Potential Absence

Veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali is prepared to take over as captain of England’s senior men’s cricket team in the event that regular leader Jos Buttler needs to take a paternity leave as the squad prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024.

Moeen might have to step up to captain for a few games in Jos Buttler absence because he and his wife Louise are expecting their third child at the time of the tournament.

Notably, in the Melbourne finals of the 2022 edition, the Three Lions triumphed over Pakistan. Against Scotland on June 4, the English team, ranked in Group B, will begin their title defense. The 36-year-old Moeen talked about his potential to lead England.

“I’ve played in a good number of games as vice captain and substituted for Jos when he wasn’t available. That really doesn’t bother me. Not too much will change. It’s simply replacing what he’s doing. We agree upon something. “Hopefully, Jos doesn’t miss too many games and the baby arrives at the right time,” Ali stated, as cited by The Daily Mail.

If I’m performing well, I want to keep performing: Moeen Ali

In his twelve prior T20 internationals, the seasoned all-rounder has captained England and won five of those games. Buttler, an accomplished opener, is an essential component of their batting order, though.

Along with discussing his future goals, he was upbeat and said he would continue playing the game until he was both physically and skillfully fit.

“I want to keep playing if I’m doing well. If I’m not playing well in the World Cup or for any other reason, I might decide that now is the right moment. There’s not much time left. I want to play for as long as I can if I’m playing extremely well and my body is doing great,” he said to BBC Sport.

The England squad is presently preparing for the major tournament, which starts on June 1, by playing a four-match Twenty20 International series against Pakistan. The first Twenty20 International was canceled due to severe rains before a ball was ever balled. On May 25, in Birmingham, the two teams will play their second Twenty20 International.
