In the 2024 Indian Premier League, Daryl Mitchell, an all-rounder from New Zealand, will play for the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Daryl Mitchell, who was normally a top-order batsman, has moved to the middle-order after being acquired by CSK for an incredible INR 14 crore at the auction.
Mitchell’s outstanding performances for New Zealand, particularly his 552-run performance at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, made him one of the most sought-after players in the IPL auction. With an eye towards his potential to contribute with both bat and ball, CSK won the bidding war to secure his services. In the IPL 2024, the 32-year-old has so far amassed 22 and 24* runs in addition to 1/18 against Gujarat Titans.

In an interview ahead of CSK’s game in Visakhapatnam versus Delhi Capitals, Mitchell discussed adjusting to his new position. I also enjoy competing. That’s what motivates me to go into whatever task is at hand in order to help our cricket team win. And at CSK, it’s about managing the middle, playing that No. 4 or No. 5 role, and positioning ourselves so that the big boys can try to launch it at the end. I therefore enjoy taking on various tasks for the team; it’s enjoyable,” Mitchell said to India Today.

Mitchell said, “Yeah, I guess that’s the cool thing about batting in the middle order; itnever the same,” emphasising the adaptability needed in the middle order. Every innings is distinct from the last. My ability to adjust to various circumstances and figure out how to continue attempting to build partnerships while simultaneously applying pressure to the bowlers is something I take great confidence in. Daryl continued, “It was neat to watch the boys at the top make the most of that new ball and set the platform.”
The Kiwi player said that his delayed international debut helped him refine his technique and mentality at home. “My goal is to play international cricket in the future. It has been a blessing to be able to practice at the domestic level for a while and figure out not only the kind of player I want to be but also the kind of person I want to be off the pitch. And I consider being able to accomplish that to be yet another true blessing,” Daryl Mitchell said in closing.
After winning their first two games at home, the five-time champions haven’t had the best start to the season. CSK will want to carry that momentum into their upcoming games. Before returning to Chennai to play the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team will play two away games.
