After losing their opening two games of the 2024 season, the five-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians have had a rough start. Their early loss can be largely attributed to the fact that star batter Suryakumar Yadav is out due to recuperating from surgery for a sports hernia. But there have been indications lately that the top-ranked T20I batter in the world will soon make a return.
Before having surgery, Suryakumar Yadav—fondly known as SKY—played his final game during India’s tour of South Africa in December 2023. The Mumbai Indians camp, which is eager for their team’s fortunes to turn around, was thrilled when his Instagram activity lately aroused rumours about his possible comeback.

The National Cricket Academy (NCA) team is closely monitoring the Mumbai-born player, who is making outstanding progress. In order to guarantee that the middle-order batsman is fully fit, the BCCI and NCA are carefully evaluating him. Despite being close to making a return for MI, a BCCI source stated that Yadav may miss a couple more IPL games in order to demonstrate his readiness for the field.
Surya is improving quickly, and he will soon be rejoining the MI team. However, he did miss the first two games, so NDTV cited a BCCI official who said he might have to miss a few more.
In the T20 World Cup in June, Suryakumar Yadav will be an essential cog.
The BCCI’s main worry is whether Yadav will be fit for the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies in June, when he is anticipated to be a key player for the men in blue.
“If he is on track for the World T20, which he is, that is the BCCI’s first worry. The source continued, “He will play for MI, but he can’t be rushed after a sports hernia surgery.”
Yadav, 33, has an exceptional T20I strike rate of 171.55, and he is frequently compared to the legendary AB de Villiers for his creative stroke play. His return will be a huge help for the struggling Mumbai club. He has amassed 6969 runs in 270 20-over games, including four centuries.
On April 1, MI and the Rajasthan Royals will square off at the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai, the five-time champions, will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing performances in their previous two games and start their quest for a possible sixth championship. This will be Mumbai’s first game at home.
