On Tuesday, January 30, at Kingsmead in Durban, the Durban Super Giants defeated the Pretoria Capitals by eight runs, securing their spot in the SA20 2024 Qualifier 1.
A confident Durban side won the toss and elected to bat first, coming off the back of three straight victories. For the loss of two wickets, they scored 76 runs in the first seven overs. Matthew Breetzke smacked 10 fours and three sixes during his incredible 73 runs off 46 balls. Heinrich Klaasen continued his purple streak in the tournament with another 30 from just 18 balls.
With seven wickets gained in the final 10 overs and just 67 runs conceded, Pretoria turned things around quite impressively in the latter part of the innings. Durban’s 20 overs resulted in 174/9. Senuran Muthusamy and Daryn Dupavillon each took three wickets to aid Pretoria in mounting a comeback in the match.
The Capitals enjoyed two respectable partnerships for the second and third wickets of 40 and 35 runs, respectively, after Phil Salt left for a duck in the second inning. Will Jacks scored a brilliant 41 off of 26 balls. But Rilee Rossouw’s unusually plodding innings of 10 runs off 27 balls made it extremely challenging for the batsmen to follow the equation.
Durban gave all of their bowlers a green light for the crucial playoffs by skillfully rotating their bowling options. Ultimately, the visitors lost by eight runs, with 20 coming off of Keemo Paul’s final over. The bowler of choice for Keshav Maharaj’s team was Junior Dala. In his four overs, he concluded with fantastic figures of 5/26. Pretoria has put itself in a tight situation by dropping this match; in order to advance to the next round of the competition, they will need to rely on other outcomes. On Saturday, February 3, Durban will play their final round-robin match against the Johannesburg Super Kings.
