Jasprit Bumrah received criticism for violating the ICC Code of Conduct.

In the opening game of the ICC World Test Championship series against England in Hyderabad on Sunday, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah of India received an official reprimand for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

In the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, Jasprit Bumrah was found to have violated Article 2.12, which prohibits “inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an international match).”

Furthermore, Bumrah has received one demerit point added to his disciplinary record; this was his first offense in a 24-month period. Bumrah intentionally stepped in Ollie Pope’s path as the batter tried for a run in the 81st over of England’s second inning, resulting in unwanted physical contact. This happened after Bumrah had completed his follow-through.

Jasprit Bumrah acknowledged the offense and consented to Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees’ suggested punishment, so no formal hearing was necessary.

Third umpire Marais Erasmus, fourth umpire Rohan Pandit, and on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney all made the accusation. A player who violates Level 1 rules faces a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of their match money, and one or two demerit points.

Speaking of the game in Hyderabad, England played a brilliant game of baseball to win by 28 runs and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. In the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah—still an integral part of India’s lineup—took six wickets. India and England’s second Test match is scheduled to begin in Vizag on February 2.
