Prior to the opening Test match against England on Thursday, January 25, India skipper Rohit Sharma recently addressed his pain on the country’s lack of an ICC trophy since 2014. Notably, Team India has had an incredible run in ICC competitions since 2014, yet despite making it to the knockout stages nine times in the last 10 tournaments, they have failed to win a trophy.
India has won the most matches in ICC World tournaments during the aforementioned timeframe, having won 63 of 92 matches. When Rohit Sharma looked back on his time leading team India as their full-time captain starting in 2022, he said he missed winning an ICC tournament. He did, however, also emphasize how crucial it is to have a positive outlook on the future because one cannot go back in time.
“It has been an amazing three years. With the exception of the ICC trophy finals, we have won everything. We haven’t been able to complete that task, but I believe the moment will come. Since the past cannot be changed, all we can do is have a positive outlook and try not to dwell too much on the past. We’re all quite focused on what’s going to happen next since that’s something you can change, Rohit stated on JioCinema.
Speaking ahead, Rohit Sharma reminisced about his incredible run in the 2019 ODI World Cup and said that if the team doesn’t win the trophy in the end, his individual achievement doesn’t bring him much happiness.
“Players going out there and playing with a lot of freedom is a change I wanted to see happen. I intended to remove this team’s emphasis on statistics related to cricket. We are giving it our all while we play. Ignorance of numbers is rampant. We certainly discuss numbers and all of that a lot in India. In the 2019 World Cup, I scored five hundreds, yet we were still defeated. The hundreds are irrelevant,” he continued.

With 648 runs from nine innings at an average of 81, the Indian opener finished as the tournament’s top run scorer with a record five hundreds (the highest in a single edition) and one fifty. Nevertheless, despite his incredible performance, India was unable to win the title and was eliminated from the competition after losing to New Zealand in the opening semi-final.
