In a move to comfort Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris, Australian skipper Pat Cummins reached out to the overlooked openers, stressing their continued consideration for Test selection post David Warner’s retirement. Despite their outstanding efforts, Harris—a contractual player and backup batsman during the Ashes tour—and Bancroft—the top run scorer from the previous Sheffield Shield season—were left out of the impending West Indies assignment.

Smith, who had voiced unease at No. 4, saw this as a long-term commitment as opposed to a temporary solution. Cummins saw a change for the better when studying the effects throughout training.
