It appeared as though the hosts would finish the first innings quickly, but Subhranshu Senapati, a former captain of Odisha, had other plans. The Ranji Trophy Group D match between Odisha and Madhya Pradesh took held at the Emerald High School Ground in Indore from January 12–15. Odisha’s lead in the first inning allowed them to take three points out of the tie. But not many could have expected this outcome on the opening morning of the match, as Odisha collapsed to 38/4 after Madhya Pradesh won the toss and chose to bowl first. With Rajesh Dhuper, Prayash Singh, and Suryakant Pradhan, he forged productive alliances that helped his squad reach 253/7.
It was not to be for long for Sunil Roul, as Odisha lost their eighth wicket for 259 runs. But Senapati had a lot of help from No. 10 batsman Harshit Rathod as they put together an incredible 238-run partnership to put Odisha in a strong position. After a valiant 277 off 487 balls, Senapati was eventually removed from the game after hitting 19 fours and 11 sixes during his lengthy stay at the wicket. This was his maiden first-class double-century.
Rathod was left stranded on 60 off 162 balls when the final Odisha batsman to be dismissed in the first innings was Jayanta Behera, batting at number 11. The visitors achieved an astounding 498 points in the end. Madhya Pradesh ended the first innings on 318 thanks to Harsh Gawli’s 167. Odisha sent them in to bat once more, and they were unable to escape follow-on. Madhya Pradesh played strongly in the second essay, with wicketkeeper-batter Himanshu Mantri scoring a clean century. They made their declaration on 291/4 and gave their adversaries a goal of 112.
In the fourth innings, Odisha could muster only 10 overs and finished at 38/1, happy to have earned three points. Senapati scored 33 runs off of 25 balls without losing. He was rightfully adjudged Player of the Match.
A portion of Subhranshu Senapati’s IPL 2024 auction was unsold.
Senapati participated in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) as a member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Although he was not given a game, he was active in the field and appeared in several matches as a substitute fielder. CSK released him prior to last month’s 2024 IPL auction.
At the auction, Senapati, whose starting price was INR 20 lakh, had no buyers. But, if any team in the lucrative league needs a substitute, the 27-year-old might be called up based on his steady play on the local circuit.
