Shukri Conrad said, “It is a sad state of affairs when you need more luck than skill to survive in a test match,” in reference to South Africa’s loss to India in the Cape Town Test.
After selecting a second-string team for their next Test tour of New Zealand, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has come under heavy fire. For the two-match Test series in February, up to seven players without caps have been selected. The tour’s captain is none other than Neil Brand, a left-handed opener who has not yet played for his country. Only three of the 14 players selected for the assignment—David Bedingham, Keegan Petersen, and Zubayr Hamza (the lone second Test)—were included in South Africa’s squad for the just-finished home Test series against India. The primary domestic Twenty20 competition in South Africa, the SA20, takes place concurrently with the two Test matches against the Blackcaps.
The lucrative league will feature South Africa’s regular players. The CSA gave priority to the franchise league because it may give the board, which has been having financial difficulties for some time, financial security. Head coach of the Proteas, Shukri Conrad, has defended the CSA’s choice to field a new squad, citing the significance of the SA20 in the growth of South African cricket.
“I adore how foreigners have learned to understand South African cricket like pros. We have been forced into this; everyone knows that the SA20 is essential to the survival of local cricket.
Reuters cited Shukri Conrad as saying, “If it doesn’t happen, we won’t have test cricket anyway.”
In an attempt to prevent conflict with the SA20, the CSA attempted to reschedule the New Zealand series, according to a statement they recently released. It never materialized, though.
All the same, South Africa is traveling to New Zealand. Our national anthem and team blazer are the same, and we sing them together. Anything we can salvage, like a draw or a surprise victory, would be quite satisfying for us, as the coach stated.
India defeated South Africa by seven wickets in the second Test at Cape Town to tie the two-match Test series. Day 2’s second session saw the foreigners prevail, with just 642 legitimate deliveries bowled in the match. With the help of the balls, this became the shortest-ever completed test match. On an uncertain pitch, the pacers wrecked havoc, bowling not a single ball throughout the Test match. Shukri Conrad acknowledged India’s victory and bemoaned the fact that hitters in Cape Town required luck in addition to skill to survive.
When you need more luck than skill to survive in a test match, it is a depressing state of affairs. Not to belittle India; they were excellent, but you won’t win many tests with a 55-run first-inning total. Regarding the defeat, Shukri Conrad stated, “I will not place the blame on our playing XI. This has shocked the system.”
