My final test was scheduled to be with Lord's: David Warner

After receiving criticism for his dismal performance in the format, star Australian batsman David Warner said that he had intended to retire from Test cricket during the Ashes series last year. He acknowledged that he did not have much of an impact on the team and that, following the second Ashes game at the storied Lord’s Cricket Ground, he had made the decision to retire.

The veteran is presently engaged in his farewell Test series, with Australia’s match against Pakistan in Sydney serving as his last Test match. The southpaw predicted that his squad can sweep the series 3-0 and noted that the team’s performance in Sydney will be important.

“I wanted to stop the debate about myself and my form early, so I stated pretty plainly in England before the World Test Championship that my ideal preparation to complete would be Sydney. However, I had Lord’s scheduled as my final test, particularly if my combination with Uzzie [Usman Khawaja] at the top of the order didn’t work out as planned,” David Warner stated on Monday, via ESPNcricinfo.

“After that, we simply continued to play some excellent innings together. That hundred [in England] that I’d always desired but never quite managed to get my hands on. However, we all performed our part as a team, so getting to this conclusion is fantastic; it’s not about me, it’s about us. Although we’ve won the series, it would be fantastic for the squad to win 3-0 and have a clean sheet at the SCG,” he continued.

David Warner, who is widely recognized for his exceptional hitting ability, has solidified his position as an all-around talent.

The 37-year-old has had an outstanding career, appearing in 111 Test matches and amassing an amazing total of 8695 runs at an average of 44.58 thus far. Furthermore, he was Australia’s leading run scorer in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which was a major contributing factor to their successful campaign. Outside of the world of international cricket, David Warner has had great success in the Twenty20 league, especially in the well-known Indian Premier League (IPL).
