Meg Lanning’s decision to withdraw from international cricket left Tahlia McGrath as the Australia team’s vice captain. She was captain of the national squad in the 2022 T20I series in India and has been a member of the leadership group for a while. Opening up about her new position within the team, the 28-year-old said that she had never considered leadership before, but that changed after participating in Belinda Clarke’s mentorship program.
The all-round player said that over the past few years, she has made significant improvements as a leader. Tahlia McGrath said that other coaches thought he had a lot of promise, which gave her confidence to manage teams in franchise and international cricket.
“A few years ago, if you had asked me if I considered myself to be a leader, I wouldn’t have come close. Being the quiet, reserved person with little to say, I was the one who was shy. A couple of my coaches recognized something in me that I might not have. I then had several chances to lead. I received a lot of value from Belinda Clark’s mentorship program, which I considered a great blessing. McGrath said that there are several leaders in the dressing room who can speak out when anything is needed, ahead of Australia’s eagerly anticipated one-off Test match against India. She disclosed that there are many leadership roles within the team, so no one member bears exclusive accountability.
“This Australian side’s greatest asset is that there are other leaders besides Midge and me. There are a lot of leaders in the group who speak out when something important has to be expressed. Individuals who lead the fielding effort and take a shot for the team. With so many team members holding leadership positions, we are spoiled for options and it doesn’t depend entirely on us, McGrath remarked.
