Cricket fans around the world chastised the West Indies for not making the cut for the just-finished ODI World Cup, with many blaming the players, board, and whole infrastructure. Since it was the first time the West Indies had missed out on qualifying for the main event, it was assumed to be the end of their ODI cricket career. But since then, the team led by Shai Hope has improved, and soon they are once again the talk of the town—but this time, for all the right reasons.
Using the DLS technique, the home team defeated England by four wickets in the third and final one-day international. Rain delayed the start of the match, but once it happened, Jos Buttler’s team was reduced to 45/3 thanks to Matthew Forde’s impressive performance with the new ball. Forde claimed three wickets. The Three Lions were 49/5 at one point, and neither Harry Brook nor the captain could muster any momentum.
Although Liam Livingstone did a good job of supporting Ben Duckett with 45 runs, it was not enough to gain any momentum despite his 71 runs. As the visiting team scored 206 runs in 40 overs, Alzarri Joseph removed the last ball.
Keacy Cartey scored 50 runs and Alick Athanaze scored 45, laying the groundwork for the West Indies to succeed in the chase.
The host team was under strain again when Will Jacks claimed three wickets, but Sherfane Rutherford and Matthew Forde’s partnership was sufficient to get the West Indies through. Notably, the DLS system meant they were limited in time; therefore, Rutherford’s 41 runs off of 28 deliveries proved to be incredibly important.
It was the first ODI series victory against England for the West Indies in twenty-five years. In the meantime, captain Shai Hope received the Player of the Series award and Matthew Forde was named Player of the Match.
