In July and August 2024, India will visit Sri Lanka for a six-match white ball series, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said on Wednesday, November 29. Notably, SLC has been through a terrible phase since the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended the team because of influence from the government. The ICC U19 World Cup 2024 has also been moved from the island nation to South Africa, adding even more pain to the situation.
The Sri Lankan men’s and women’s teams will be permitted to participate in the bilateral series despite the ban.
The three-match ODI and T20I series between Sri Lanka and India is scheduled to take place in July–August of 2024, as per the SLC 2024 calendar.
The calendar indicates that the men’s national team of Sri Lanka will participate in 52 international matches in 2024, comprising 10 Tests, 21 ODIs, and 21 T20Is. The matches they will play in the T20 World Cup 2024 are not included in the T20Is, though.
The World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2023–25, which includes a three-match away Test series in England, will present Sri Lanka with its most difficult challenge of the upcoming year. November’s two-match Test series against South Africa will be the other significant task. Notably, by crushing them 2-0 in a Test series in South Africa in 2019, Sri Lanka became the first Asian team to do so.
Roshan Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka’s minister of sports, was fired
While this was going on, President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka dismissed Roshan Ranasinghe, the country’s sports minister, after the ICC banned his cricket team and he disbanded the SLC’s elected body.
Murali Ranasinghe had ousted the elected cricket board, claiming that those holding office were deeply corrupt. They fiercely refuted the accusation, though, and are presently fighting it in court.
Following Ranasinghe’s removal from the SLC, an interim committee was appointed, led by their captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who led them to victory in the 1996 World Cup. Notably, the ICC Board maintained the decision to suspend Sri Lanka Cricket, which was made on November 10, during its meeting in Ahmedabad on November 21.
