Bangladesh loses a commanding session right before tea.

The Bangladesh batsmen Momimul Haque and Mahmudul Hasan Joy dominated the second session of the opening day, scoring 76 runs in 26 overs; however, they were dismissed within seven balls of one another at the close of the session.

Following lunch, New Zealand had a couple of opportunities to score when Jamieson got Mahmudul to nick one, but the ball went through the gully for four. Joy reached his fifty with a powerful cover drive, but there were still opportunities, as twice in four overs, Mominul edged one between the second slip and the keeper for four off Southee’s bowling. The majority of boundaries came from dangerous shots, but New Zealand was beginning to lose patience with the pair’s lack of ability to be dismissed.

But as the practice came to a close, Mominul attempted to attack Glenn Phillips by cutting a fairly full ball while staying low, only to receive an under-edge and witness Tom Blundell make an unbelievable reflex catch. Mahmudul appeared to be more confident after getting the wicket, but in the following over, he was caught stealing one from Ish Sodhi to the right of slip, and Daryl Mitchell caught a screamer to send the composed Mahmudul packing, fourteen runs short of his century.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahadat Hossain, the two new batsmen at the crease at the end of the session, looked to rebuild in the final session in order to guarantee a substantial first-inning total.

Earlier, when Bangladesh chose to bat, the opening duo effectively navigated 10 overs of pace before Ajaz Patel entered the game to bowl some left-arm spin. Spin was introduced, and it paid off when Ajaz beat Zakir Hasan on the cut and knocked him over.

Then, Najmul Hossain Shanto unleashed his fury, refusing to accept that Bangladesh would lose at their own game: spin. Consequently, Najmul faced Ajaz and hit three sixes before losing to Glenn Phillips’ off-spin at the start of lunch.
