“As Black Caps, we really take pride in that.” Daryl Mitchell argues in support of helping Virat Kohli during the World Cup semifinal.

In a contentious statement, Scott O'Donnell questioned the sportsmanship of New Zealand by helping India's Virat Kohli when he was experiencing cramps when reaching his 50th ODI century.

India’s cricket team defeated New Zealand in the semi-final to guarantee their place in the Cricket World Cup 2023 final. The home team’s outstanding performance during the game, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma’s team, astounded the audience. After the victory, controversial comments by former Australian cricket player Scott O’Donnell questioned New Zealand’s sportsmanship for assisting India’s Virat Kohli, who was experiencing cramps while reaching his 50th ODI century. He stated that because of Mumbai’s hot and muggy weather, the Kiwi players had no business supporting Virat when he was in discomfort from cramping. Considering the intensity of the Wankhede semi-final encounter, this comment caused some eyebrows to rise. Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand responded by justifying his team’s behavior and highlighting their dedication to their distinct style of cricket, both on and off the field.

“I believe that’s something that the Black Caps and New Zealanders take great pleasure in. In a conversation with the media, Daryl Mitchell stated, “We want to play cricket in a style that suits us as a nation and we want to see our youngsters grow up and play the game themselves.

“We will continue to play cricket the way we know how in the hopes that others will come to appreciate us and the way we live our lives both on and off the field. We are Kiwis. We’re quite proud of it, so we’ll simply keep being Black Caps and carrying out our mission,” he continued.

He emphasized their excitement for the forthcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh and expressed satisfaction in playing cricket the way they do as Kiwis.

“That is the current state of world sports. We will attend because we adore Test cricket and it holds great significance for our team. On the first day of the test, we’ll be prepared and ready to go back in that black cap.”
