Eoin Morgan criticizes England’s senior players and management for avoiding the media

Former cricket player turned commentator Eoin Morgan has blasted England manager Matthew Mott and key players for lacking the guts to go before the cameras.

England’s performance in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India has been underwhelming. Being the first team eliminated from the semifinal race, the Jos Buttler-led team surrendered to the poorest title defence.

After losing to New Zealand in their opening match, England had the worst conceivable start to the competition. They then looked to be headed in the right direction after defeating Bangladesh in their second match. The reigning champs, on the other hand, faltered and dropped five straight games.

The England team management sent assistant coach Carl Hopkinson to the Ahmedabad post-match press conference following their side’s 33-run loss to Australia, which also resulted in their elimination from the premier tournament. The World Cup-winning captain, however, took exception, saying he was taken aback by the decision and accusing the team management of evading their duty. The 37-year-old believes that the assistant coach should not have attended the press conference in favor of the head coach or any of the team’s senior players.

“It stunned and amazed me. As a head coach or captain, you make those judgments during a meeting; nevertheless, when anything goes wrong, you need precise guidance and clarity. Senior players or your head coach are the first people you typically turn to when discussing message during an interview process, Eoin Morgan stated in an interview with Sky Sports.

The former cricket player continued by raising concerns about the team management’s apparent “shirking of responsibility.”

“In some cases, you may examine it and ask, ‘Are they abdicating their responsibilities?’ It’s a sinking ship right now, and individuals need to own up to their mistakes,” he continued.
