Shreyas Iyer

Simon Duoll, a former New Zealand cricketer and broadcaster, praised Shreyas Iyer for his outstanding performance against Sri Lanka on November 2 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during the 2017 ICC Cricket World Cup. India set a massive 358-run goal against the Kusal Mendis-led team after being called to bat first. Later, India’s pacers tore apart the Lankan hitters, handing them a commanding 302 run victory that advanced them to the semi-finals.

After the game, Doull talked about Iyer and said that he is a batter who understands his duty. He also said that in order to create an innings with the best strike rate, middle-order batters play high-risk cricket and high-risk strokes. The 28-year-old scored 82 runs with three boundaries and six maximums in just 56 deliveries, which is noteworthy.

“Shreyas Iyer understands his function with remarkable precision.

There will be high-caliber performances and low-caliber performances. I believe that Iyer is pretty at ease in that role. He plays high-risk strokes and high-risk cricket because he wants to score at a high strike rate, Doull said Cricbuzz.

The 54-year-old gave Shubman Gill further accolades, saying that Iyer and the opening batsman had silenced their detractors in Mumbai with their blows. He continued by saying that Iyer had a fantastic innings and that India have now checked every box in the current competition. Aside from Iyer, Gill (92) and Virat Kohli (88) were also important players for India, as the pair put up an incredible 189 runs for the third wicket.

“Observing the bowlers in action, there was never any doubt. The keys for today were Shubman and Shreyas. They made everyone silent. India has now checked every box. Shreyas had a truly noteworthy innings. Now that he has made a big contribution throughout his innings, he can walk tall knowing that all the boxes have been checked,” the former cricket player continued.
