On Thursday, November 02, at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India’s new ball duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj forced Sri Lanka to repeat the horrors of the Asia Cup 2023 final. India made a massive score of 357/8 in their allotted 50 overs after being sent to bat first.
In response, Jasprit Bumrah, a speedster, gave the side a tremendous start by trapping Pathum Nissanka in front of the stumps with the first delivery of the innings.
In the same over, Mohammed Siraj also joined the celebration by getting Sadeera Samarawickrama caught at slip and removing Dimuth Karunaratne leg before wicket. The right-arm seamer made matters worse by dismissing captain Kusal Mendis (1 off 10) in the very next over, putting Sri Lanka at 3/4 after 3.1 overs.

Following the first four wickets, Mohammed Shami was introduced into the attack by skipper Rohit Sharma. The right-arm seamer did not let him down as he quickly went down the Sri Lankan batting order. In 13.1 overs, Shami claimed four more wickets to further inflict agony on Sri Lanka, who were reduced to 29/8. In 19.4 overs, Sri Lanka was eventually bowled out for just 55. Mohammed Shami concluded with scores of 5/18 in five overs, taking his fourth career five-wicket haul.

In addition, Shami overtook Zaheer Khan’s 44 wicket record to become the most prolific wicket-taker for India in the history of the ODI World Cup with 45 wickets from just 14 matches. Throughout his World Cup career, the 33-year-old has an astounding average of 12.91 and an economy of 4.91.
He has taken 14 wickets from three matches in the current edition with an economy of 4.27 and an average of 6.71. Shami was rightfully named Player of the Match for his heroics against Sri Lanka, which sent India to the tournament’s semifinals.
