The ODI World Cup 2011 failure was the lowest of the lows for India captain Rohit Sharma, who has also experienced many highs, including the T20 World Cup victory in 2007 and many IPL championships. The 36-year-old had to overcome other obstacles before entering the professional arena, too, in order to become the first player to score three double century in ODIs.
When discussing his impoverished beginnings, Rohit said that when he was a child, his family used to sleep in the same room with at least 10–11 other people. He noted the challenges of it because everyone used to sleep on the floor while his grandfather slept in bed. He remembered the occasions when he had to curl up to sleep soundly since there was no room for his legs.
That was our room, you know. Ten to eleven of us used to snooze. Me, my uncles, aunts, and grandma were on the floor, with my grandfather on the bed. I’d curled up. I had to touch someone or anything with my leg for some reason. My leg would rest on the wall while I dozed off.
Rohit Sharma was quoted by Indian Express as saying, “If not, I can’t sleep.
Later, Rohit Sharma continued, his grandfather had requested that his parents take his brother to Dombivli while keeping him with them. As a result, Rohit Sharma spent some time apart from his parents when he was three years old because he resided in Borivali and his parents were about 50 kilometers distant.
“Dadaji had said, ‘Leave Rohit with us and take the tiny one with you,’ (‘Rohit ko idhar chhod de, aur chhote wale ko leke ja apne sath’). I did so, staying in Borivali, while my family was staying in Dombivli, which was 50 kilometers distant. We used to live in a 100 or so square foot house, eight of us, said Rohit.
He mentioned playing cricket in the Borivali gullies and even getting into a fight while the game was going on.
