Shubman Gill said after missing a century in the series-deciding ODI against the West Indies, "Was looking for big score but that didn't happen."
India’s rising batting star Shubman Gill has spoken candidly about his outstanding performance against the West Indies in the third and final ODI on August 1 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad.

After a poor showing in the previous two ODI matches, Shubman Gill hit an explosive 85 from 92 deliveries. Gill remarked that his game-winning performance was a great knock for him but that he had been hoping to score a lot more runs.

“Very special for me; I was looking for a big score but unfortunately that didn’t happen and I’m happy that we ended up on the winning side,” said Gill after receiving the Player of the Match honour.

Shubman Gill noted that scoring runs against the old ball was harder as the game went on when talking about the surface. Although he got off to a poor start, the 23-year-old produced some excellent strokes to help India reach 351 runs. His opening partnership of 143 runs with Ishan Kishan (77 off 64 balls) laid the groundwork for India’s innings in the championship game.

It was a good pitch, he said, adding that the ball initially came on nicely before becoming harder to hit as it grew older.

I simply do my best and don’t give much thought to who is playing or not.

The youthful opener also spoke about his second ODI performance against the Windies and his opinions on how the 50-over game has developed over the past few years. He continued by saying that he always gives it his all and doesn’t stress too much on who is or isn’t participating. Notably, in the first two ODIs, Gill only scored 7 and 34 runs, respectively.

“In the most recent game, I was prepared and searching for a big one and attempted to accelerate; you’ve got to keep applying pressure to the opposition as that’s how the ODI game has progressed recently. I just do my best and try not to worry about who’s playing or not,” he said.
