“Teams must compete in major tournaments,” Harbhajan Singh on India’s lack of success in ICC competitions after 2013

"Teams must compete in major tournaments," Harbhajan Singh on India's lack of success in ICC competitions after 2013

According to Harbhajan Singh, team India hasn’t performed well in ICC tournaments since 2013 since they don’t compete as a unit. Since 2013, the Indian team has competed in eight knockout matches (finals and semifinals) at ICC competitions without winning a championship.

The Indian team most recently suffered a defeat to Australia in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval. Since the WTC competition’s start in 2021, India has twice advanced to the finals but failed to win the championship. Now, the upcoming major occasion is the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will take place in India.

“I’m not sure; it’s hard for me to explain what we had and what they don’t. Harbhajan singh stated this in an interview with News24 Sports: “I think players who play for the country, in whatever era they may be playing, I feel their sole motive is to play well and win for the nation.

“In 2015 and 2019, we played all the way to the semifinals, but the ICC trophy never arrived. Maybe only one or two players have shown the capacity to counterpunch after absorbing pressure. You must compete in major competitions as a team, he continued.

Future obstacles for Team India at the ODI World Cup in 2023

The former Indian spinner made a strong case for why the Men in Blue struggled in ICC competition, but team India needs to get ready for upcoming tournaments, particularly the ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India.

The two-time ODI World Cup champions are depending on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s return from a back ailment. He hasn’t played in an international match since September of last year. Shreyas Iyer, who bats in the middle order, is similarly prone to injuries and last played in March of this year.

The Indian team’s inability to replace the injured batters or bowlers in the 2023 WTC final was one of the factors that contributed to their defeat. The team might as well break the curse and end the ICC trophy drought with the home advantage and India’s key players returning from injuries prior to the major event.
