For both India and the West Indies, the Test series will mark the beginning of the World Test Championship 2023–25 team. As India ramps up preparation for the Cricket World Cup later in the year, the ODI series will also be significant for them.
India has made some important decisions by adding some new faces to the Test setup following the disappointment of losing the World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval. Yashaswi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, two uncapped batters, have been added to the lineup in place of veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara.
When opening the batting for the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, respectively, Jaiswal and Gaikwad had outstanding IPL seasons. Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav are not included in the team, which also includes pacers Mukesh Kumar and Navdeep Saini. Along with Rohit Sharma remaining as captain, Ajinkya Rahane has been chosen as the team’s vice captain. Jasprit Bumrah still isn’t able to participate because of his ongoing back issue.
There are several of the regulars on the ODI team as well, and Gaikwad is included in the white ball setup as well. Sanju Samsom has also been recalled due to the injuries suffered by KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
In the pace department, Mukesh Kumar is again included in the limited-overs squad, with Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammed Siraj being included as well. Umran Malik completes the pace bowling department. India have also included four spin-bowling options in the ODI squad, with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel all making the cut.
Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI side, with Hardik Pandya named as his deputy.
The test series will begin on July 12 in Dominica and end on July 24 in Trinidad. The three-match series will follow suit and will be played between July 27 and August 1.
India has yet to name its squad for the T20I series.
