A day after making the announcement in an emotional news conference, Tamim Iqbal has come out of retirement. The event transpired following Tamim’s meeting with Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladeshi prime minister.
I received an invitation to the Prime Minister’s home this afternoon. I’ve decided to come out of retirement right now after she reprimanded me and asked me to play again.” Tamim Iqbal remarked on July 7 in front of the PM’s house.
“I have the ability to refuse everyone, but it was inconceivable for me to refuse someone with the PM’s level of authority. Both Papon (Nazmul Hasan) and Mashrafe (Mortaza) were very important. I came here when Mashrafe bhai called, and Papon bhai was also present. In addition, the prime minister granted me a respite of 1.5 months for my medical care and other reasons. I’ll play the remaining games once I’ve recovered mentally.
Before the 2023 World Cup in India, Tamim’s retirement had been unexpected, but it also happened to occur shortly after his conflict with the management. Particularly, Nazmul Hasan took issue with Tamim’s press conference admission that he wasn’t totally healthy for the first ODI against Afghanistan but would still play.
According to information obtained, Tamim’s candid revelation did not sit well with the team management. They spoke with him and suggested that he take some time off if he thought he was not fully fit, but Tamim ultimately decided against it. There have also been rumors that head coach Chandika Hathurusingha spoke with Nazmul Hasan and conveyed his displeasure with the entire situation.
Following Tamim’s announcement that it was his final international match, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) summoned an emergency meeting and named Litton Das the interim captain for the team’s final two one-day internationals (ODIs) against Afghanistan. Nazmul publicly urged Tamim to reverse his “emotional” and “hasty” decision when speaking to the media late at night.
Tamim’s remark outside the PM’s mansion was followed by BCB President Nazmul telling the reporters, “I assumed that he took the decision emotionally.” Naturally, this is a huge relief. How are we supposed to play without a captain?
“I was confident that if I could only talk to him, I could persuade him. The Prime Minister called us into his office today. Tamim announced that he would revoke his letter of retirement. But he has taken a 1.5-month vacation to get back in shape physically and mentally.
