Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, said he was upset after reading a study that said racism, sexism, classism, and elitism were common in English cricket. The Prime Minister (PM) chose to talk to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) about these sensitive issues.

The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) did a two-year investigation, made 44 suggestions and demanded an apology from the ECB based on what they found. After the review, PM Sunak met with ECB Chair Richard Thompson on July 1 to talk about the situation and find a solution. The PM also talked about the ICEC report and encouraged the ECB to work on the problem and apologise.

“It was hard to read for people who like cricket. You were just upset that your favourite sport was talked about in that way. It was really sad to find out that there were all these problems. I’ve spent some of the morning talking about it with the people at the ECB. “They did everything just right,” PM Rishi Sunak was reported as saying by the Daily Mail.

ECB apologised without any reservations and promised to fix the problems.

The ICEC was made public after Azeem Rafiq, a bowler from Pakistan who played for the English county of Yorkshire, was accused of being racist. In 2020, the cricketer spoke out about how the management treated him and said that racism and bullying were going on. This led the ECB to order the study.

“The ECB asked for this report to be made. They did it on their own because they wanted to be proactive about addressing people’s worries, which is a good thing to do. They are doing it in the best way possible. They’ve given a full explanation, and from what I’ve heard from Richard and the rest of the team, they’re determined to fix the problems and make this a fresh start for cricket,” he said.
