Carl Hooper, who used to be captain of the West Indies and is now an assistant coach, said something very surprising about where the national team is in world cricket right now. The Windies didn’t get a straight spot in the next ODI World Cup, which will be held in India. Instead, they’ll have to play in the qualifiers to get a spot.
Also, the Caribbean team is placed tenth in ODIs, which puts them below teams like Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Assistant coach Carl Hooper is worried about where the team is right now and said that if they don’t get better, they could hit rock bottom.
“There has been no change. The question is, Can we go any lower? Yes, we can go lower than this, and we do if we don’t meet the requirements. I never thought I’d see the day when the West Indies would be trying to get into big events.
“I was sitting in Australia, and we struggled to get through the T20s, and now we’re in Zimbabwe, “Carl Hooper was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying.
“No offence to the other teams, but we’re playing against teams like the USA, Nepal, and Scotland. Afghanistan is even ahead of us, and Bangladesh has passed us. So, this is sad, and can we go any lower? Yes, we can go lower,” he added.
The West Indies will play the United States of America in their first ODI World Cup Qualifier match.
On Sunday, June 18, the Windies will play their first qualifier game against the United States of America (USA). Before their first game, Hooper, who seemed upset about having to play in the qualifiers, said again that his team would have to work their way up and not get any worse.
“This game keeps reminding you that you can go lower until you start doing the right things. As I’ve already said, I never thought I’d see this day, but here I am, starting a game in Zimbabwe on Sunday. Carl Hooper said, “We have to try to beat the USA.”
