"Why Ashwin?" - Devang Gandhi backs Ravichandran Ashwin for the job of leader until the younger players are old enough to take over.

When Australia beat them in the final of the World Test Championship, it was yet another sad moment for Team India. Over the course of five days, the Aussies defeated Pat Cummins’ India. They won the game by 209 runs, which gave them their first WTC title. After the WTC final, India is all set to go to the Caribbean for a multi-format series against the West Indies in July and August.

Before the series, Devang Gandhi, a former national selection, said that giving Yashasvi Jaiswal a chance in the Test series instead of Pujara could do great things for India. Soon, the new WTC cycle will start, and after their disappointing loss to Australia in the summit match, India will be looking to change up their team.

“The problem is that if you give Pujara a Test series against the West Indies and he scores, you have to keep him for another year because there are no more Tests until December. So do you do that, or do you get a young person right away and train him for bigger fights?” Devang Gandhi was described as saying this by the Hindustan Times.

He also said that 23-year-old Shubman Gill could be India’s captain in the future, but Ravichandran Ashwin or Ajinkya Rahane could lead the team until the young players are old enough.

“Why Ashwin? And if you say that he isn’t a sure thing abroad, I would say that even Rahane, who is the vice captain, was once taken out of the playing XI. So Ravichandran Ashwin or Rahane could be considered for a short time before Gill solidifies his spot in the Test XI,” Gandhi said.

The first Test between India and the West Indies will start on July 12, and the second will start on July 20. Also, the first test will be held in Dominica, and the second will be in Trinidad.
