Young opener Prithvi Shaw has been one of Delhi Capitals’ (DC) greatest underachievers in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). Prior to the 2023 IPL season, DC head coach Ricky Pointing predicted that this would be the rookie’s breakthrough year. However, he has performed poorly and was released after six games.
With 10 points from 13 matches, the David Warner-led team is currently in ninth place in the IPL 2023 points table and is no longer eligible for the playoffs. On Saturday, May 20 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, DC will face the four-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league encounter. On May 10, MS Dhoni and company defeated DC by 27 runs in their first match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Shane Watson told reporters prior to DC’s match against CSK that Shaw’s failure has been the greatest disappointment for DC this IPL season. Additionally, the former CSK batter stated that the youngster is one of the most beautiful batters to witness and that his talent allows him to overcome the best bowling.
“Prithvi Shaw was one of the most disappointing aspects for DC this season. NDTV quoted Watson as saying, “He is one of the most beautiful batters to watch, and his skills allow him to overcome the best bowling.”

The 41-year-old continued by stating that management had provided him with a great deal of room for growth and that he has centralized and concentrated on the direction he wishes to take. He also believes that Shaw should dominate international cricket given his tremendous potential. Notably, DC gave the 23-year-old a second opportunity in match 64 against Punjab Kings (PBKS), which DC won by 15 runs. He produced a surprising comeback with his first fifty of the season.
“Knowing this, we gave him a great deal of space to discover his footing. We were also aware that he had been somewhat inconsistent over the past few years. However, by missing a few games, he was able to concentrate on his goals. Because he is so tremendously skilled with the bat, he must coordinate all aspects of the game.
“He ought to rule international cricket. However, it may take some time for individuals to determine how to do so consistently. The other day, he certainly had a touch more fire in his belly,” he added.
