IPL athletes are paid significantly less than those in other leagues: Players' Association

Tom Moffat, the chief executive officer of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association, stated plainly that IPL players earn less than those in the world’s main sports leagues.

It is no secret that the BCCI invests vast sums of money in the development of cricket in India. In turn, the introduction of the IPL (men’s top-tier league) and the launch of the WPL (women’s top-tier league) have substantially contributed to the apex board’s tremendous financial growth. In addition, according to D&P Advisory, the IPL’s valuation has increased by 75 percent since the year 2020, reaching $10.9 billion at present.

Despite this, Tom Moffat, the chief executive officer of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association, stated that IPL and WPL players are significantly underpaid compared to players in other prominent leagues around the world.

“Players adore participating in the IPL, but it’s undeniable that, as a proportion of the league’s total revenue, the overall player payments are significantly lower than in comparable leagues. Moffat was quoted by the Telegraph as saying, “We look forward to continuing to see the IPL and the WPL be successful and contributing to the players being paid fairly and proportionally to their contribution and other leagues around the world.”

According to the Telegraph, the BCCI provides £48 million annually to all ten participating franchises, with the governing body keeping half of that amount. After all commercial settlements, the teams distribute only 18% of their revenues as salaries to the players.

In the Premier League (the highest level of English football), players receive up to 71% of the league’s revenue as part of their compensation. It is believed that the IPL’s current salary limit of £9.5 million will increase slightly to £10 million for the 17th edition of the competition.
