'Must have players thinking the game until the very end' - SRH head coach Brian Lara on team's struggles in the middle order

After defeating them on April 19 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, the Mumbai Indians halted Sunrisers Hyderabad’s winning streak in the IPL 2023. The Orange Army had been performing well, having won consecutive games against the Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, but their confidence was shaken when they were defeated by Mumbai. Brian Lara, the team’s chief coach, was dissatisfied with their performance and felt that the middle order was particularly weak. While addressing the issue, he added that the middle order is a “work in progress” and that SRH required players like David Miller and Rahul Tewatia, who have mastered the art of batting in the middle order under pressure.

“The project is in process. We need players who think strategically throughout the entirety of the competition. IPL contains a number of outstanding examples. Tewatia and Miller are the types of individuals who must comprehend how to calculate going down, who the bowlers will be, and how to correctly plan. We’ve been working on that. We were not the top team on Tuesday. We must embrace this as true. “Today, Mumbai Indians was the superior team,” Lara said in the post-game press conference.

In pursuit of a target of 193 runs, SRH’s previous game’s centurion, Harry Brook, was dismissed very early for nine runs, and Rahul Tripathi walked back after scoring seven. Mayank Agarwal and captain Aiden Markram stabilized the innings in the middle, although Agarwal took some time to get moving and Markram was dismissed in the ninth over.

Though Agarwal led SRH in scoring with 48 runs off 41 balls, his strike rate of 117.07 indicates that he labored to score against Mumbai’s bowling attack. Brian Lara believes that SRH could have won the contest and that they were doing well, but the frequent loss of wickets caused the team to lose momentum and ultimately lose the game.

“I felt we were always in the game, and I thought the field was perhaps a 175.” It was somewhat sluggish off the deck. We attempted to remain in the game throughout, but we consistently lost wickets during our chase, which slowed us down. Both our team and Mumbai Indians were coming off consecutive victories, so we knew they were gaining momentum, and I believe they played superior cricket today,” Brian Lara added.
