Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, stated on Friday that the next edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) could be contested in a home-and-away format with a larger window, most likely during the Diwali holiday.
“We are considering the possibility of scheduling the WPL in a home-and-away format during the Diwali window—not two seasons in a year, but simply a different time window,” Shah said in a media interaction.
“Women’s cricket now has a devoted fan base, and this number will only increase as we anticipate a strong turnout at the next WPL.”
The inaugural edition of the five-team tournament was conducted at two venues in Mumbai from March 4 to March 26. It concluded just five days prior to the start of the IPL 2023 season in March and attracted large audiences in Mumbai, particularly at the DY Patil Stadium and during the knockout rounds.
On March 26, at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, defeated Delhi Capitals, led by Meg Lanning, by seven wickets to win the trophy.
This year, Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, will be observed on November 12. The BCCI will also host the men’s ODI World Cup from October 5 to November 19 across 12 cities, so it remains to be seen if it will shift the WPL window to that time of year this year.
