Technical Committee led by Sanath Jayasuriya will investigate Sri Lanka's inability to qualify directly for CWC 2023.

According to News18, Sanath Jayasuriya, who was Sri Lanka’s Player of the Tournament during its 1996 World Cup victory, told reporters that this talented group of players deserved the necessary confidence.

The Sports Minister of Sri Lanka, Roshan Ranasinghe, has appointed a technical committee to investigate the reasons for the country’s inability to qualify directly for the forthcoming mega event to be held in India later this year. New Zealand’s victory in the third ODI at Hamilton last month ended Sri Lanka’s hopes of directly qualifying for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. On Tuesday, April 11, they made their first public appearance. Jayasuriya stated to the media that they will inquire with the coaching staff about the causes of the team’s failure.

The legendary cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya heads the technical committee, which also includes three other former national players.

“We will inquire with the coaching staff as to why they did not achieve automatic qualification. They must also provide a short-term improvement plan.

Sri Lanka has participated in every World Cup since its inception in 1975 and claimed the coveted trophy in 1996. In addition, they placed second in the 2007 and 2011 competitions, respectively. The island nation will compete in the qualifying tournament for the first time to earn a spot in the premier international cricket tournament.

Ten teams will compete in the qualifying tournament for the two remaining places in the 2023 CWC.

March’s 0-2 loss to New Zealand in a three-match One-Day International series derailed Sri Lanka’s prospects for automatic qualification. As a result, they were unable to advance to eighth place in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League table. Seven teams have already qualified for the ODI World Cup, while South Africa and Ireland are still in contention for the eighth qualification place.

From June 18 to July 9 in Zimbabwe, the Dasun Shanaka-led team will compete in the qualifying tournament alongside nine other teams. Only two of these teams will qualify for the World Cup. Sri Lanka will compete alongside Zimbabwe and the West Indies for a position.
