With 75 hundreds now under his belt, Virat Kohli has at least 50 more to go: Sikh Harbhajan

After more than three years, Virat Kohli finally broke the Test century drought on Sunday, March 12, when he smashed an incredible 186 in India’s first innings of the fourth and final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test. Harbhajan Singh, a former cricketer for India, thinks that Kohli, 34, can go on to break Tendulkar’s record of 100 international tons by becoming just the second batter in the world to reach the milestone of 75 centuries.

The hosts finished at 570/9 after surpassing Australia’s first-inning total via scores from opener Shubman Gill and former India captain Kohli. The home team finished their innings with a 91-run advantage over the visiting team, Australia, who had scored 480 runs at the end of their first innings. Virat Kohli scored his 28th ton in whites and 75th overall, shattering multiple records in the process. Shubman Gill scored his second Test century.

“It’s definitely conceivable. I believe he is capable of scoring more (100 centuries). Virat benefits from his age and physical fitness in this situation. He is a 34-year-old cricketer, yet he is physically fit as a 24-year-old. In that regard, he is well ahead. He’s already hit 75 centuries, and he still has room for at least 50 more. He plays all formats and is skilled,” Harbhajan said to Sports Tak.

Similar to Harbhajan, many analysts expected that Kohli would surpass Tendulkar in terms of the most centuries scored, but the discussions died down while Kohli was going through a tough period in his career. However after Kohli recorded his first T20I century against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup and three ODI centuries between December 2022 and January 2023 while competing against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, that time came to an end.

“You could think I’m being overly dramatic, but it’s really conceivable. Virat Kohli has the ability to pull it off. All of the rest are far behind him. He was aware that he needed to improve his fitness because his batting prowess is a divine gift. He probably won’t stop after this. There aren’t any technological issues, and even if there were, he would fix them. Five century have already been scored since his return (after a break). He is basically making a return with this, Harbhajan continued.

The rumors of Kohli’s retirement have ended now that he has a Test ton and is back in form in all formats. Fans and experts want him to keep smashing records and accumulating runs in order to establish himself as a famous player of this age of cricket. Harbhajan is one of several who believes that Kohli has the potential to not just surpass Tendulkar’s record but also reach 50 further hundreds.

Harbhajan expressed his delight with the Ahmedabad pitch, saying: “It’s good that he (Kohli) got a chance to bat on a pitch that helps batters. Before, games would last three days, and bowlers would rule the day. The right to receive pitches from which they can score runs also applies to Virat, Rohit (Sharma), and Cheteshwar Pujara. A fifty on a surface made for bowling is equivalent to a hundred, and they’ve done that.
