Tiwary backs Rohit’s captaincy

Gill, who succeeded the 38-year-old as skipper in October 2025, has lost two consecutive ODI series.

Tiwary backs Rohit’s captaincy

Manoj Tiwary, a former cricket player for India, has encouraged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to switch up the ODI captaincy. He wants former captain Rohit Sharma to take Shubman Gill‘s place as the team’s leader once more.

Reappointing Rohit as the ODI captain, according to Tiwary, will significantly increase India’s chances of winning the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Since taking over as captain in October 2025, Gill has lost two straight ODI series. The 38-year-old was the previous captain. The Men in Blue, under Gill’s leadership, just lost their first-ever home series in ODIs against New Zealand after losing the series in Australia. As a result, the former cricket player for the Kolkata Knight Riders feels that Gill need to be fired as captain in order to make room for the 38-year-old once more.

Why was Rohit Sharma’s captaincy taken away? I’m fairly certain that the outcome of the New Zealand series would have been completely different if Rohit had been leading even now in the ODIs. According to InsideSport, Tiwary stated, “I believe the team was moving in the right direction when he won the Champions Trophy.”

Reintroducing Rohit, who led India to victory in the Champions Trophy under challenging circumstances in Dubai and has an impeccable white-ball record as captain, would, in Tiwary’s opinion, increase the team’s chances of winning significant trophies in the future.

“Rohit is currently far superior to Shubman, not just slightly so. He is a very successful captain because of this. You can win the World Cup under Shubman’s leadership, but I would advise contrasting the two captaincies. What is the winning percentage if Rohit is named captain? And what is the winning percentage if Shubman is ahead? Everyone will probably agree that there is an 85–90% possibility of winning the World Cup if Rohit is the captain, Tiwary continued.

When Ranji returns, go for the silver duck.

In contrast, Gill, like other Punjab batsmen, struggled on a rank turner during his Ranji Trophy comeback against Saurashtra in a Group B match. Two India internationals faced off, and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the Fazilka-born player for a lacklustre score.

They bundled out Punjab for just 139 after scoring 172 in their opening inning, which included the Indian captain’s two-ball duck. With two wickets remaining, Saurashtra currently leads by 249 runs. Jadeja used 44 balls to score 46 runs.
