David Warner stays with Thunder

Prior to BBL 2026–2027, former Australian opener David Warner signed a one-year contract extension with the Sydney Thunder, securing one of the Big Bash League’s most prolific hitters for another season. After a dismal season as a club, the seasoned left-handed batter will continue to lead the squad in 2019.

David Warner was the top run scorer in BBL 2025–26, scoring 433 runs at an exceptional average of 86.6 and a strike rate of 154.09, including two undefeated hundreds that helped the Sydney-based team stay competitive despite a difficult season overall.

David Warner expressed his enthusiasm for staying with the squad and his faith in their ability to make a comeback after deciding to stay for an additional year. The 39-year-old added that in order for Thunder to recover in the next season, work is already being done behind the scenes.

“We are a much superior team than what we put on the pitch this season, and we were unable to put together a consistent game, so it was definitely a difficult year for us. However, our supporters’ unwavering attendance at every game was a major factor in my choice to stay. David Warner stated in a franchise statement, “I feel like I have a lot more to give to this team and to this game.”

He said, “We’ve already started looking back at the season and making the necessary preparations to make sure we deliver a much stronger campaign in BBL 16.”

David Warner remains the finest batter in the BBL: Copeland of the Thunder

Trent Copeland, general manager of the Sydney Thunder, praised the move and emphasised David Warner importance to the team on and off the pitch.

“That Davey will be returning for another season makes us very happy. In addition to being one of the top T20 players in the world during the past 15 years, he has had an amazing season. He is also unquestionably one of the best batters in the BBL, and his level of fitness is exceptional. Copeland stated, “He is as driven as ever as a leader to improve upon a disappointing season for the squad.”

Warner’s performance in BBL15 was outstanding. Despite playing towards the end of the tournament, he produced a number of game-changing runs, including a career-best undefeated 130* at ENGIE Stadium, and ended up being one of the competition’s most dependable run-scorers.

Hobart Hurricanes vs. Sydney Sixers is a Challenger match.

In other news, the Sydney Sixers are vying for a position in the competition’s playoffs against the Hobart Hurricanes on Friday at the Sydney Cricket Ground as the elite T20 league season continues to heat up. Ashton Turner’s Perth Scorchers have already advanced to the final match and will take on the victor of the aforementioned match on Sunday, January 25.
