Moeen Ali, a former England all-rounder, has expressed grave worries about Bangladesh cricket’s current situation, claiming that the team is struggling because it lacks elite players outside of a few well-established stars.
Moeen Ali presently plays for the Sylhet Titans in the Bangladesh Premier League. He feels that the league’s overall quality has not improved, which has inevitably had an impact on Bangladeshi cricket in general.
With the rise of players like Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, the off-spinner believed that Bangladeshi cricket had a lot of potential. However, the Bangla Tigers’ inability to generate elite players over time affected them.
“With players like Shakib [Al Hasan] and Tamim [Iqbal], I thought Bangladesh was doing pretty nicely earlier, but I don’t think there has been enough progress recently. Bangladesh cricket is having trouble since there are a lot of talented players right now, but not many elite players,” Moeen Ali told The Daily Star.
Although the league acknowledges the quality, Moeen Ali believes that the learning curve has been sluggish and that the younger players have not improved.
“Coaching, facilities, or the system as a whole may be to blame for the current players’ apparent struggles. There are some really bad shot selections in the BPL. The concerning aspect is that people have grown accustomed to seeing the same errors repeatedly. Even after a few seasons, I continue to observe the same mistakes being made by players. Learning seems to be moving extremely slowly,” he added.
In addition to players, Moeen Ali was outspoken about the league’s state and quality, outlining why it is finding it difficult to compete with other international T20 leagues like SA20 and the Big Bash League.
“To be honest, the main problem is that it conflicts with other leagues. Perhaps another season will be necessary. I hope that next season will be better, insha’Allah. However, it will require time—almost like beginning anew,” Ali said.
The 38-year-old is one of the most successful T20 players and has played for T20 leagues all over the world. With the Chennai Super Kings, he has also won two IPL championships.
