Jaiswal’s path to all-format spot outlined

In order to improve his chances of becoming an all-format regular in the national system, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has advised Yashasvi Jaiswal to record a 700-run season in IPL 2026. Thus far, Jaiswal has participated in 28 Test matches, four ODIs, and 23 T20Is.

Chopra’s remarks followed Jaiswal’s exclusion from both the last T20I series against New Zealand and India’s T20 World Cup squad. The well-known analyst believed that Jaiswal’s ability would be undervalued if he scored less than 700 runs in the IPL.

“I have a request for you, Yashasvi. I wish you an IPL season with 700 runs. I imagine it would be like this for you every year. The 400- to 450-run seasons you are having are insufficient. Not for your standards, not for you. For you to break through and enter, I need a season with 700 runs. That’s my expectation of him. I want him to do it for me. In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Chopra said, “Yashasvi should really become a three-format player sooner rather than later.”

The 48-year-old pointed out how talented India is and how difficult it is for a player of Jaiswal’s calibre to be a regular member of the white-ball teams. He did, however, add that after the World Cup is over, Jaiswal might establish himself as a regular in T20I.

“It’s unexpected. You can’t play Yashasvi in all three formats, which only serves to highlight India’s depth. He will not play in the current match since he is aiming to score a tonne of ODIs. In T20Is, he isn’t even close. He is not on the T20I team, but he is at least on the ODI team. But after the World Cup, things will be different. Prior to that, I thought things would change, but now they don’t seem to. After then, it will alter,” he continued.

Thus far, Jaiswal’s Test-match figures for India have been impressive. In 28 Tests, his average is 49.23.

With 164.31 runs in 23 games, the left-handed batter has also performed admirably in the shortest format. He hasn’t been able to secure a spot in the ODI team, though.
