Kohli family responds to retirement talk

Vikas Kohl, the brother of former India captain Virat Kohli, has sparked a discussion about his choice to withdraw from Test cricket. The remark was made soon after analyst Sanjay Manjrekar questioned Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket, citing his continued success in the Ashes alongside Steve Smith and Joe Root.

The dispute started when Manjrekar voiced unhappiness over Kohli’s decision to quit red-ball cricket in response to Root and Smith’s outstanding Test performances. He said that instead of retiring, the 37-year-old might have demonstrated more determination in dealing with his difficulties. Manjrekar’s remarks attracted notice right away. Vikas, who frequently stands up for his brother when he is criticised, replied on Threads.

“LOGON KI DAAL ROTI NAHI CHALTI SEEMS TO BE THERE. Vikas remarked, “BINA VIRAT KOHLI KA NAAM LIYE HUE, (It seems like people cannot run their houses without taking Virat Kohli’s name).”

Virat Kohli simply quit playing cricket: Manjrekar

In his Instagram video, Manjrekar said that Kohli averaged 31 in Test matches during the final five years of his career and asked why he didn’t devote all of his energy to correcting technical errors. He went on to say that it was more upsetting that Kohli chose to play in ODIs rather than retire entirely.

“Well, Virat comes to mind when Joe Root achieves unprecedented success in Test cricket. He left Test cricket, and it’s a shame that during the five years he suffered before leaving, he didn’t fully dedicate himself to figuring out the issues that were causing him to average 31 in Test matches. What he could have done is a matter for another time.

However, I find it depressing that players like Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson are becoming well-known in Test cricket. It was all right; Virat simply quit from cricket and walked away. However, I’m actually more disappointed that he’s decided to play one-day cricket since, as I’ve already stated, this is the easiest format for a top-order batsman,” Manjrekar remarked.

But the seasoned batsman came into 2026 in fine form, winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi in domestic cricket and extending that winning streak into international one-day internationals. His knocks of 77 against Gujarat and 131 against Andhra demonstrated his unwavering desire for runs.
