Robin Uthappa calls for better ICC scheduling

No year has gone by without a men's or women's ODI or T20 World Cup since 2021.

ICC tournaments every year not ideal: Robin Uthappa

According to former cricket player Robin Uthappa, the significance of major ICC competitions such as the ODI and T20 World Cups has begun to wane in recent years. In order to preserve the importance of any ICC championship in its purest form, Robin Uthappa, the winner of the first ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, has stated that the top cricket organisation must reorganise ICC competitions and lower their volume.

According to Robin Uthappa, the number of ICC events that take place each year is overwhelming cricket fans, viewers, and the general public, particularly as franchise-based T20 leagues grow in popularity. The former cricket player who is now a commentator has proposed extending the time between two international competitions.

“In my opinion, the game has to change from an administrative standpoint. How much emphasis do spectators and supporters place on an annual ICC tournament these days? To be completely honest, and with all due respect, its novelty is wearing off. Additionally, I believe that the ICC championships must be unique. It’s essential, in my opinion, not just for the athletes but also for the spectators and fans. It must have some significance.

According to Tribune India, Robin Uthappa stated, “There has to be a little bit of a gap.”

The Coorg native added that holding a World Cup each year won’t advance international cricket to new heights. He has called on the ICC to comprehend the current trends in cricket and take appropriate action.

“An ICC championship cannot or should not be held annually. And it’s the harsh reality that I believe the administrators must confront. The game is progressing in a certain direction, and you cannot push that path into another area. The former wicketkeeper-batter came to the conclusion, “You have to go with that and try to maximise that towards where it’s moving.”

The Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for February 7–March 8, will be the first significant ICC event of 2026. The Women’s T20 World Cup, which will take place in Wales and England, will begin in just three months. It will be interesting to watch if the ICC takes Robin Uthappa advice into account for next competitions.
