Shreyas Iyer fit to join ODI squad

Shreyas Iyer, India’s ODI vice-captain, has been given the all-clear to join the team for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. After playing in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025–26, Shreyas Iyer , who was included in India’s 15-man squad earlier this month pending fitness clearance, has effectively shown that he is ready. On Friday, January 9, he is scheduled to join the national team.

The first ODI between India and New Zealand will take place in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11. After suffering a severe spleen injury during the October ODI against Australia in Sydney, Shreyas Iyer is making his comeback to international cricket. The 31-year-old was admitted to the hospital after sustaining internal bleeding from a spleen injury during an attempt at a catch. After that, he was unable to attend India’s home series against South Africa.

Shreyas Iyer outstanding stats highlight his significance in the ODI format.

He has amassed 2,917 runs at an average of more than 45 in 67 innings, garnering recognition for his poise and calm in the middle order. Although he has also amassed 811 Test and 1,104 T20I runs, his reliability in the 50-over format has solidified his position as a vital member of India’s lineup.

The Mumbai batsman scored 82 and 45 in two games during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, demonstrating excellent form. During those games, Shreyas Iyer also captained Mumbai in Shardul Thakur’s absence due to injury.

On January 7, the majority of India’s ODI team arrived in Vadodara. After hosting women’s Premier League games and women’s One-Day Internationals at the recently constructed Kotambi Stadium, the city is about to host its first men’s international match in more than 15 years.
