At the KL Saini Ground in Jaipur on Tuesday, January 6, Shubman Gill defeated Goa with a meagre 11 runs off 12 balls, making his comeback to the Vijay Hazare Trophy less than successful.
In preparation for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, the conditions were favourable for the right-handed batter to receive some match experience. Prabhsimran Singh won the toss and chose to bowl first, dismissing Goa for a mere 211 in 33.3 overs. Shubman was not under any pressure from the scoreboard, but in the fifth over, former Karnataka quick Vasuki Koushik dismissed him. Suyash Prabhudessai caught him.
Since February 20, 2025, Gill has not scored 50 or more in the white-ball format.
During this time, he has participated in seven ODIs. The batter from Punjab was just left out of India’s T20 World Cup roster. In the 15 Twenty20 Internationals he played in the previous year, he failed to register a single half-century. All eyes will be on his performances against the Kiwis in the forthcoming ODIs following his most recent domestic cricket setback.

Shubman Gill fell short of a century by just 89 runs today. Unfortunate dismissal for our captain — the ball clearly didn’t respect his leadership….
Now it makes sense why he skipped the Maharashtra match. Domestic pitches don’t come with the ‘flat track…. pic.twitter.com/4bP1bkeWdS— Rakesh (@Rakesh328334981) January 6, 2026

Shubman tried to kill the swing by stepping forward but the swing survived, Gill didn’t…
Once again proving why flat tracks are in his comfort zone….

Shubman Gill gets out on 11 runs off 12 balls in a VHT match against Goa.
This could well be a beginning of his downfall 📉.

Despite Shubman’s lacklustre batting performance, Punjab easily defeated the Deepraj Gaonkar-led team. With six wickets remaining, Punjab easily won in 35 overs on Tuesday. With 20 points from six games, Prabhsimran and company maintained their lead in Group C after this victory.
